A three-member judicial commission has been established by the UP chief minister to look into the situation
Atiq Ahmed, a former politician, was accused in around 100 cases, including kidnapping and murder.
A police team from Uttar Pradesh brought Ahmed, to the high-security Sabarmati Central Jail in Gujarat's Ahmedabad, to Prayagraj on 26 March to produce him in a court in the 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case.
On 28 March , the court sentenced two others and Ahmed to life imprisonment in the kidnapping case.
Ahmed petitioned the Supreme Court for protection, stating that he and his family had been wrongly accused of being involved in the murder of Umesh Pal and that the Uttar Pradesh Police might kill him in a staged encounter
